At my most recent appointment with my CDE, who started me on the Omnipod, she shared a little tid bit that I thought you all might be interested in. She said that Omnipod had originally used copper for one small piece in the pods (I can't recall if this is the metal she said, but it was a higher grade metal). To cut costs, they switched the part (to either nickel or aluminum). The batches with the new metal part began to have much higher failure rates, and Omnipod switched back to the original component.
She said I would probably notice that my most recent delivery of Pods had fewer failures (it's true!). She was very angry that Omnipod had not made her (or us) aware of this until after the fact. Why not just recall those boxes? Anyway, this news made me angry but also glad that the Pods seem to be much more consistent now.
Oh, and I forgot to mention- got my new A1c and it was 6.2- only .1 up from last time! Looks like it wasn't just a fluke or a pump honeymoon. This is why I can't hold a grudge with Omnipod!

I just found your blog today and I'm really glad I did! I am 20 and was diagnosed with type 1 at the end of this past January. I was going to school out of state but will have to move back in state this coming semester because of all the costs (my mom always said I couldn't do anything the cheap way). I'm supposed to be getting a pump really soon and I saw an ad for the Omnipod in Diabetes Forecast this afternoon and thought I'd do a little snooping on the web. I like everything I've heard about it so far. The only thing I wonder about is where to put it when I go out dancing and wear a tight fitting shirt... Any suggestions?
to outriding01: the best i can offer to hide the pod when wearing a tight shirt is just to put it on the lower back or on the back of your shoulder- not necessarily out of sight, but it won't show up in pictures or be as obvious when talking with someone new (who you might not feel like giving the whole diabetes schpeel to).
a few times when i have been at a bar or club, dancing with a guy, his hand might brush the pod...but none of them have been concerned about it. they're too focused on the dancing!
if you feel super self-conscious about it, or just don't want to ruin a perfect outfit, you CAN go off the pod for a day and use shots. but when i had to use shots for a day a few weeks ago it drove me crazy! it's so much easier to adjust for dancing or drinks with no shots involves. the pump really spoils a girl =)
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not really self conscious and I don't mind people knowing at all. Most people are just curious and ask a lot of questions which I don't mind answering because I'd love the genral public to be better informed and more aware of Type 1 anyways. I just don't want people coming up to me every five seconds going "Pssst, you have something stuck under your shirt". But doesn't sound like that will be a problem! I requested a demo pod, so when that gets here I'll experiment with it, but I am really excited! No more shots! ;)
